COCo-NOTE

Last month’s COCo note was dedicated to the launch of the Frances Ravensbergen Walking the Talk Award at the COCo Annual General Meeting. This $1000 Award was presented to our own Frances Ravensbergen to be passed along to any community organizations of her choice. For those of you who were curious about where the money went…. ..Frances decided to split the award between Jobra Centre (working on poverty reduction in Park Extension)and The Welfare Rights Committee (working out of St Columba House). Congratulations again to Frances, Jobra Centre, and The Welfare Rights Committee!

Now it’s time to explore another highlight of the COCo AGM and to share what happened when 30 Quebec community leaders put their heads together and reflected about the gaps and the opportunities in our community work.

The reflection began with an outpouring of answers to the following question:
What have you seen happening in the last 5 – 7 years that has been novel or significant in the Quebec Community Sector?

For those of you who weren’t able to join us for the AGM I want you to STOP READING RIGHT NOW and think about that question. What has been changing in the community around us?

INCREASED RELIANCE ON TECHNOLOGY, increased immigration, PUSH FOR SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP, framing poverty in terms of basic rights, MORE HYBRID FORMS OF ORGANIZATIONS were some of the answers shared…. What other changes do you notice?

After reflecting together on these changes in the environment around us, we then asked people to break into small groups and respond to one of the following questions:

What issues and challenges are we not yet addressing in the Quebec Community Sector?

What are the most promising untapped assets or resources in the Quebec Community Sector?

Again please STOP READING RIGHT NOW and consider these questions – it is critical that we all take the time to look at the gaps and the opportunities in our community work – this is how we grow and evolve.
Here are some of the reflections from our AGM participants – it is our desire at COCo that these ideas well help to fuel and inspire creative new programs and projects in all of our work.

THE GAPS IN OUR WORK: (1) Environmental Justice, (2) Basing our work on a cross-cutting holistic mission rather than institutionalization, (3) Connecting grassroots links with national advocacy capacity, (4) Established services or resources for newcomer or ethno-cultural communities, (5) Capacity of grassroots groups to utilize new technology to renew our organizing tactics.

THE UNTAPPED OPPORTUNITIES: (1) Growing desire for community and engagement,
(2) Recession opening possibilities for new lifestyles and work models, (3) Untapped power of elder and intergenerational resources, (4) Technology as a powerful social-change tool, (5) Cross-pollination and collaboration between the French and English sector.

So there you have it some food for thought brought to you by this year’s AGM participants and the COCo Team.

BIG PICTURE

As part of COCo's ongoing interest in encouraging all of us to receive 'food for thought about the Big Picture' impacting on our organization's, there are two important events taking place soon:

MUST READS
Votre association, personne morale sans but lucratif: Pour les administrateurs et les membres des associations - Denis Racine

As in preceding editions, this latest Votre associaiton is a useful source of information for administrators. Its chapters deal with everything from administrative structures, rights and responsibilities of members, general assemblies and meetings, as well as finances. New in this edition: revisions in the laws related to legal publications (which took place in 2005) and municipal taxation laws (2000). This edition also addresses the increasing role of the internet. Sample agendas, useful contact information and a lexicon round out this essential guide.

Administrateurs de corporations sans but lucratif: Le guide de vos droits, devoirs et responsabilités - Paul Martel

Administrateurs contains many of the topics in Votre association, but is presented quite differently. It relies heavily on a question and answer format supplemented by numerous case studies, and puts the focus on your rights and responsibilities. Special pictograms help differentiate information for federal programs from provincial programs. If your questions are in line with those mentioned in this guide, you’ll find this guide very easy to use. It also has a great index.

1. NEW COCo PROJECT: In the know: Identifying multiple facets of Quebec's community sector

In the know: Identifying multiple facets of Quebec's community sector A community research project!

The Center for Community Organizations (COCo) works with groups who support communities in all shapes and forms across the province. With financial support from Quebec's Secrétariat à l'action communautaire autonome et aux initatives sociales (SACAIS) we have developed a project to document the diversity of community groups in Quebec and understand more clearly how they relate to broader systems such as provincial funding bodies.

We are currently encouraging community groups in Montreal, Laval and the Eastern Townships to participate in an on-line survey. Other regions will be invited to participate over the next two years. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and is vital to help us in our work of raising the profile and viability of ethnocultural, bilingual and English-speaking groups. Please distribute the survey as widely as possible to groups that you think should be included.

The data we collect will be presented on an interactive map on our web site.
Participating in our survey means you can share who you are, where you are and what you do with a broad audience.

All you need to do to be a part of this initiative is visit www.coco-net.org/survey [5] and fill out the survey.
