May 2008

COCo Quiz of the Day:

What do the following suggestions all have in common?

- Hold a yearly Board training session to review and discuss the roles and responsibilities of the Board and staff, the by-laws, the policies and the programs/services.

- Get three quotes before committing to investing in new technology. You can sponge tons of priceless info from the process.

- When writing or re-writing bylaws, don't re-invent the wheel. Get in touch with similar organizations to get advice or copies of their bylaws, or review sample documents on the web. Use this information to reflect on what your organization needs in its by-laws.

The answer:

They were part of the myriad of examples that were shared at the last Ideas Exchange on Healthy Habit: Examining Systems and Structures That Keep Organizations Alive. (To receive a copy of the summary report, give Sarah a buzz at COCo).In the evaluation of the event, participants highlighted the importance of taking time to connect with others- to hear how other organizations function, the challenges they have, and to share solutions.

Another way we can connect with other organizations is by coming together to work on common struggles. There are several projects that come to mind. One is the May 3 demonstration organized by the Coalition Solidarité Santé for the right to public health carewww.CMAQ.net/fr/node/29462). If you can't attend, check the website for a petition you can circulate. Another collective project is the campaign to eradicate poverty that the Collectif pour un Quebec sans pauvrete is spearheading (http://www.pauvrete.qc.ca/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=166). This project goes on until next fall and has a petition in English along with good educational activities to conduct with your board, staff, and/or participants.

Please let us know if there are other important projects or activities going on that bring us together across sectors and interests within our community work. We need to continue to be active not only within our own organization, but with others for broader social change.

The next Ideas Exchange will take place on Saturday June 7 from 12:30 - 5 at St. Raymonds Community Centre in NDG. The theme of this workshop will be how we talk about what we do. Stay tuned for more details.

Must Reads

Materials listed below are available free to community organizations for a two-week loan from COCo's Lanie Melamed Resource Centre.

Picture This! 659 Posters of Social Movements in Quebec (1966-2007) by Jean-Pierre Boyer, Jean Desjardins and David Widgington

The incredible posters included in this collection document hundreds of union, feminist, community, international, political and student-led campaigns of Quebec between 1966 and 2007. These are essentially mini-snapshots of passionate causes, hard fought battles and glimpses of bygone eras that still, at times, resonate in our community today. The posters are, at times, so engaging as to leave the reader wanting more- more information about the cause, the artist, source of inspiration, the artists or the movement's evolution. This is a tremendous resource for anyone who would like to delve further into the poster as medium of expression or the social movements themselves. It is quite something to see such a variety of posters assembled in one space. Use it, study it, and enjoy it. It is quite extraordinary.

L'organisation communautaire: la mobilisation des acteurs collectifs by Martine Duperré

What drives citizens to take action in their communities? How do we go from raising individual concerns to inspiring social movements? And what is the best way to sustain these movements? These are all questions that are raised in Dupierre's book. L'organisation communautaire is an analysis of the community organization process
using theories drawn from anthropology, sociology and regional development. It is based on a case study format of ARACSM, 'L'Association régionale des resources alternatives et communautaires en santé mentale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean' (ARACSM), a regional association for mental health. L'organisation communautaire is a good choice for those who would like to use this as a model for change, in community organizations, CLSCs, health centers and local development centers in Quebec.

Thanks to Karen Brown for contributing the 'Must Reads' and for her continued support with COCo's Resource Centre.
