Welcome to this month's COCo ebulletin!

COCo Note
Building an Equitable Workplace – Making Solidarity a Workplace Norm

By Katrina and the COCo team

Many of us who work in community groups are making a million and one things happen and often share an underlying goal of striving towards a life that is more equitable and fair; in so doing, we hope to work in jobs that we enjoy. There are many different ways of working, from consensus-based collectives to traditional hierarchical structures. So how do we work to create structures and cultures that help us to live our commitment to social justice?

Whether we like to think so or not, power dynamics exist within our groups. Sometimes, as in some hierarchical organizations, power is held solely by one person. These organizations can also allow for a sharing of power. The same thing can happen in a collective structure. Power doesn't just disappear if we decide that we are all equal and that no one is the boss.

While the ideas that drive our need to recreate our workplaces might be a source of inspiration, the formal structure we choose to adopt, whether it's collective, hierachical or something else entirely, is only one piece of the making-it-work pie. Another fundamental piece is building trust through empowerment in order to achieve a meaningful sharing of tasks that leads to managable workloads.

Creating a culture of solidarity and honesty in the work we do is key - no matter what kind of structures we work in. Yet, commiting to open communication and talking directly with a co-worker about challenges at work can be daunting. I might not like to be given feedback about the things that I forgot to do or when I left the dishes to fester over the weekend. But receiving it also gives me the chance to pick up the ball I dropped and to then keep on pushing for a better world from the inside out.

At COCo, we work in a collaborative structure where decision-making power is held largely within small area-specific working groups (we call them hubs). Decisions come to the staff team from these hubs for input, while larger cross-cutting organizational decisions are made by the staff as a whole. As elusive as it may be, thinking about sustaining collaboration in our staff team over the long term is an important part of working equitably and making solidarity a workplace norm. Yet, deciding who holds what responsibility and working creatively while ensuring that project deliverables make it out the door is no easy task, as we know we don't want to see our work for social justice buried under internal processes.

Throughout the experience that's seen us shift our way of working together, we've had a chance to think about the things that we fundamentally need. We've also commited to continually asking ourselves questions about how we should be working in the future. We recently hosted an ideas exchange on working democratically and collaboratively in order to share our experience of adopting this structure. Resources from this event are now available on our website. Ultimately, we strive for a healthy balance between building a collaborative structure within COCo while working towards social change in our communities. We are still figuring it out.

Big Picture

For big picture thinking about structure, check out www.organizationunbound.org.

For a well-developed collective model, check out the Sylvia Rivera Law Project Collective Handbook: http://srlp.org/files/collective%20handbook%202009.pdf.

Close Up

There are also good resources for groups that work with a more explicitly hierarchical model, like the excellent Boîte à outils created by the Comité Sectoriel de Main d'oeuvre (CSMO) (check out: http://www.csmoesac.qc.ca/uploads/documents/menu_sections/boite_a_outils.pdf ). It does some creative thinking about democratic participation in the groups we care about, and provides tools for healthy workplace practices. As this resource is currently only available in French, you can give us a call at COCo if you have questions about it.

Must Reads

Learning in Relationships by Ronald R. Short, Ph.D.

Learning in Relationships is about how to learn from others who have different perspectives. The book is divided three sections: the first dealing with the individual and how our perceptions are central to understanding everything we see. The second provides core principles and assumptions that prepare you to learn from your relationships. The third section helps you to put these new perspectives of your interactions to work in real situations with practice exercises. Learning in Relationships offers an interesting starting point for those who want to improve their communications and shows us that by being more aware of our point of view, we might not only better interface with people, but be able to better learn form them as well.

30. OTHER: Scholarships Still Available: CKUT Youth Radio Camp

CKUT Community Radio Station still has scholarships available for its Youth Radio Camp this summer.

There are six one week sessions throughout the summer for youth from 10-17 years old. In each session we teach the kids about djing, creating radio features, interview skills, on-air teching, editing and other radio skills so they can produce their own one-hour live show on CKUT on the Friday afternoon. Throughout the week they meet with djs, radio hosts and sound artists to learn more about radio and digital audio. It's a frantic fun experience for everyone involved. The camp is bilingual. The first camp in 2009 was a great success and one teen still contributes to the news show.

Scholarships cover the full 250$ registration fee. Visit http://ckut.ca/radiocamp.php for more details, or call Artemusik at 514-398-5505 and ask about the CKUT Radio Camp.
