AMI-Quebec is looking for a caregiver peer support agent for a new pilot project in collaboration with St. Mary’s Hospital. The goal of the project is to assist and support caregivers of elderly patients arriving at St. Mary’s Hospital in crisis (medical or psychiatric). The caregiver peer support agent will be located in the hospital and reach out to caregivers with information, guidance, and support. Upon discharge, a follow-up will be offered as necessary.
Families arriving at the hospital with a relative in crisis are often overwhelmed and confused. The peer support agent’s role is to help alleviate the stress associated with the crisis, thus reducing the burden associated with caregiving. Support offered by someone who has caregiving experience is likely to resonate well with other caregivers.
The successful candidate is an individual who has (informal, unpaid) caregiving experience caring for a loved one (family member or other). He/she will be an employee of AMI-Quebec but work out of St. Mary’s Hospital. While an experienced caregiver, the successful candidate needs to be able to support other caregivers without interference from his/her own personal situation.
Fluent in English and French, the successful candidate will:
Reach out to caregivers in the hospital and offer assistance and support
Help to develop guidelines and protocol for interventions
Participate in the ongoing evaluation of the project
Provide periodical reports
Be prepared to work some evenings
This is a 22 month contract for a full time position.
