Family Peer Support in the ER Worker/Agent de soutien aux familles à l’urgence, Pair aidant famille

December 20, 2016 @ 11:55 AM

Family Peer Support in the ER is a joint program offered as a collaboration between AMI-Quebec and the CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’ile-de-Montréal. The objective of the program is to provide support to families accompanying a loved one in crisis to the ER at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute.

The Family Peer Support Worker (FPSW) is an individual who has experience caring for a loved one with mental illness. He/she will be an employee of AMI-Quebec but work out of the Douglas as a member of the hospital’s ER team. While an experienced caregiver, the FPSW needs to be able to support other caregivers without interference from his/her own personal situation.

Families arriving at the ER with a relative in crisis are often overwhelmed and confused. The FPSW will offer support and information and help alleviate the stress associated with the crisis. Support offered by someone who has an experience as a family caregiver is likely to resonate well with families.

The successful candidate:

Has experience as a caregiver
Has a good knowledge of the mental health care system in Montreal
Is fluently bilingual (French and English)
Enjoys team work but is autonomous
Is ready to oversee the implementation and ongoing evaluation of the program
Provides periodical reports
Is prepared to work some evenings
