Make a Short Hi-Impact Video for the Web!

This beginner’s ‘bootcamp’ will walk participants through the basic steps of making a short video for the web; from writing a script to shooting and editing.

The workshop will focus on non-fiction formats, like mini-docs and explainers, and will be almost entirely hands-on.

Over six weeks, we’ll go from a rough idea to a finished, one-to-two minute video about a topic of your choosing.

It’s meant for anyone who’s ever been interested in making a video, but didn’t know quite where to start.

No special camera equipment is required, only a cellphone with video capability. Participants will ideally work in teams of two.

Class outline:

Week 1: July 9
– Picking your video topic or subject
– Learning how to best tell your story visually

Week 2: July 16
-Writing your video outline and script
-Planning your video shoots

Week 3: July 23
-Learning on-camera techniques and doing interviews on video
-Learning how to film non-interview footage, and starting to collect images and graphics

Week 4: August 6
-Shooting all remaining footage and/or interviews
-Collecting all other images, graphics or sounds needed for the finished video

Week 5: August 13
-Learning the basics of editing
-Begin editing your video

Week 6: August 20
-Finish editing your video
-Put final touches and publish your video

About the Instructor:

Paul Shore is a Montreal-based videojournalist and social entrepreneur with over 20 years experience producing, directing, shooting and editing broadcast journalism and documentaries. He has produced for traditional broadcasters including CBC, CNN, MTV, and Bravo and spent 6 years as Canada Bureau Chief for the award-winning Guerrilla News Network, the internet’s first open source news network. Most recently, he spent 2 years producing, directing, shooting and hosting The Street Speaks, a community television show on Videotron’s MaTV network.
