We are currently looking to hire a Kitchen Assistant. This person will work with our kitchen team to help with daily meal preparation and service at the Resto Depot as well as on projects with the entire Food Skills team
About the Depot Community Food Centre: Founded in 1986, The Depot is a community-based non-profit organization that works collaboratively with its community to address the root causes of hunger and poverty in NDG and the surrounding areas in a manner that ensures dignity, community engagement and the development of human potential.
About the Resto Depot:
The Resto Depot is a drop-in meal program, open four days a week that may serve up to 150 people a day and is available to the whole community. The meals use foods that are found in our Emergency Food Baskets, and highlight nutritious and delicious ways to prepare these staple ingredients. The drop-in meal just re-opened in October, and will occur in alignment with our Emergency Food Basket Distribution once it reopens later in the fall. The Depot Restaurant also includes the sharing of nutrition, cooking and other resources in collaboration with the Depot’s resource team. The Depot Restaurant is part of our Food Skills stream which also runs an afterschool edible education program called Boîte à Lunch as well as a number of community kitchens for adults. This position will also provide additional support to the food skills programs as needed.

Responsibilities / Tasks:
Assist with meal planning and preparation in The Depot kitchen and help our Community Chef with the production of our drop-in meal program: including the preparation of a meal to serve up to 150 people per day in addition to frozen meals for our emergency food basket (4 days per week).
Share cooking, nutrition and general depot programming resources with participants of the Resto Depot program and Emergency Food Basket programs.
Assist with the planning and production of healthy snack foods for our Community Snacks Program, help ensure that we have a good stock of affordable, healthy and balanced snacks that the community is enjoying;
Support the Food Skills Manager with community kitchen programming including calling participants to register them for workshops, preparation for workshops etc.
Possibility of helping with our Boîte à Lunch program (cooking workshops with kids and teens), including either supporting workshop prep or helping to facilitate a workshop with a team of facilitators
Engage and interact with volunteers and staff from diverse backgrounds, states of health and abilities, and help to maintain a respectful and supportive space for all;
Assure the safety and flow of programming in alignment with established COVID safety guidelines.

Qualifications:
Basic cooking skills and comfort in the kitchen, creativity a plus!
Able to stand for several hours at time and to carry heavy loads.
Ability to interact in affirming and inclusive ways with people of different backgrounds, values, and capacities.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
A passion for ‘Good Food For All’.
Ability to work efficiently as a member of a team.
Knowledge of the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce community is a strong asset.
A sense of creativity, initiative and a desire to take part in the adventure of life at the Depot!
Schedule and Contract Conditions:
26 week position, from November 22, 2021 to May 30, 2022. The Depot will be closed for approximately one week between Christmas and New Years, exact dates to be confirmed.
Work schedule: 28 hours per week; Tuesdsays from 12:30-7:30pm, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from approximately 9:00-4:00PM. Exact schedule to be determined with the supervisor.
Salary: 17.00$ per hour;
Supervisor: Community Chef;
This position is being offered through Canadian Innovation Fund. To be eligible, you must be:
Between the ages of 18 et 30 (inclusive) at the start of the contract;
Member of a linguistic minority (anglophone);
Be legally entitled to work in Quebec and have a valid SIN number.
