Managing Director @ Black Theatre Workshop (BTW)

Black Theatre Workshop (BTW) is currently seeking a Managing Director to build on its 50-year history of artistic growth and success. In partnership with the Artistic Director, the Managing Director serves as part of the Senior Management team, where they work in concert to execute the mandate and mission of BTW in accordance with their own respective duties and responsibilities.

Organizational Overview
BTW is a ground-breaking theatre company committed to showcasing and fostering Black Canadian artists, inspiring dialogue and broadening understanding across the country. BTW is Canada’s longest running theatre company dedicated to the works of Black and diasporic communities. Its mission is to promote and produce outstanding theatre that educates, entertains and inspires. The company strives to create greater cross-cultural understanding by expanding the representation of Black Canadian artists.
Currently BTW produces one to two mainstage productions per year, as well as a touring production during Black History Month. Other related activities include a theatre training program, a play reading series, various smaller events and fundraisers.
Responsibilities of the Managing Director
Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Managing Director is responsible for all administrative staff and aspects of the company including the management and supervision of the operational, financial and administrative performance of the company. In collaboration with the Artistic Director, the Managing Director also oversees the financial aspects of promotion and audience development. The Managing Director ensures the smooth and efficient operation of BTW and provides professional support as needed, to the Board of Directors.

The Managing Director is responsible for the execution of activities in the following areas:
● Supervise the day-to-day activities of the office, and administrative and accounting procedures.
● Establish and support the appropriate administrative systems (personnel policies and procedures) to facilitate the success of the strategies and programs of the company and evaluate performance of administrative staff.
● Handle and supervise all banking activities, as well as oversee all financial aspects of grants, marketing, publicity/promotion, school tour bookings and all other activities towards the smooth and successful function of the organization before presenting to the Board of Directors for approval.
● Lead a team of 5 to 8 employees (including contracts and salaried individuals)
● Work with the Board of Directors and the Fundraising Committee to identify potential sources of funding, develop fundraising strategies and programs, as well as prepare government grant applications.
● Liaise with the banks, auditors, lawyers, Board and Advisory Committee members, as well as industry organizations and associations such as, the Professional Association of Canadian Theatre (PACT), Association des professionnels des arts de la scène du Québec (APASQ) and Canadian Actors Equity Association (CAEA) and all other associations as needed.
● Manage and maintain facilities and facility rentals.
● Organize meetings of the Board of Directors and its Committees, as well as the Annual General Meeting.

Qualifications and key competencies
● Administrative leadership experience in a non-profit organization is a valuable and desired asset
● Proven aptitude for strategy development and planning
● Experience leading, empowering and mentoring creative teams
● Solid Resource Management experience
● Strong collaborative decision-making abilities
● Solid knowledge of the local and national theatre landscape
● Sound knowledge of governance processes and accounting principles
● Experience with both marketing and fundraising
● Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; professional fluency in French required
