Welcome to this month’s COCo ebulletin!

In the COCo tradition, February is the busiest month on the calendar. This year is no exception. We’re just about bursting at the seams with new and ongoing projects, events and our upcoming AGM, and we want to be doing it all with you. Check out the community postings section below for some of what we’re up to this month. Why not join the fun?

C’est en Franglais! Bridging the linguistic divides

Février est un mois bien spécial pour nous au COCo. En effet, il annonce la venue de notre Forum ‘C’est en Franglais’, un événement qui a pour but d’aider les organismes communautaires à tirer avantage des dualités linguistiques dans leurs communautés. (Le 9 mars prochain de 10h à 16h au 3680 Jeanne-Mance au café du MAI (1er étage).

Depuis le mois d’août dernier, nous avons eu la chance (et le bonheur) de nous entretenir avec plusieurs d’entre vous sur la question de la langue. Vous vous souvenez peut-être de ce message envoyé l’été dernier….

‘Comme base du dialogue, le langage est plus qu’un outil de communication – c’est quelque chose qu’on utilise pour s’exprimer. En fait, le langage doit avoir un rôle plus complexe – comme un outil d’interprétation de notre société. Il est donc important de considérer le lien du langage avec notre vécu historique et avec les structures du pouvoir et agenda sociaux prédominants.’ 1) Est-ce que le langage est une forme de pouvoir? Si oui, comment? 2) Dans le cadre de votre travail en tant qu’organisation communautaire, quels sont les aspects des divisions linguistiques que vous trouvez particulièrement difficiles dans vos interactions avec ceux avec qui vous travaillez? 3) Quelles sont les solutions qui facilitent votre travail dans des langues autres que votre langue maternelle?

En l’espace de quelques mois nous avons collecté plusieurs témoignages et informations qui nous ont permis d’élaborer une journée d’ateliers et d’échanges. Nous allons y parler de nos histoires, identités culturelles, dynamiques de pouvoir ainsi que des législations qui ont influées les principes-guides et les valeurs au sein de nos organisations. En utilisant ces éléments comme point de départ, nous espérons créer des références communes pour le travail que nous effectuerons ensemble.

Nous pensons également partager avec vous plusieurs priorités et stratégies élaborées par des groupes variés : promotion de la vie associative, embauche & équité et maintien d’environnements sains pour les personnes de tous les horizons linguistiques.

Nous espérons que ces quelques lignes auront su vous donner “l’eau à la bouche” et l’envie de vous joindre à nous le 9 Mars prochain!

February 2012 is a special month for us at COCo. This month we will be dedicating a lot of our energy toward organizing a day-long forum in March entitled C’est en franglais; a forum helping organizations make the most of linguistic duality in their communities (March 9th, 10:00-16:00 at 3680 rue Jeanne-Mance, 1st floor, at the MAI Café).

Since last August, we have had the chance to connect with many of you about your relationship to and experiences with language. As a matter a fact you might remember this message we sent out last summer…

“As a building block to dialogue, language is more than just a communication tool: something we use only to express ourselves. As the cornerstone of our understanding of the world, language needs to be considered as having a deeper purpose and it is important to recognize its connection to a historical backdrop and power structures. 1) Is language a form of power? How so? 2) Over the course of your community organizing, what are the aspects of bridging the linguistic gap that have felt especially frustrating or challenging for you or the people you work with? 3) What are some solutions you’ve come up with in your work that have made it easier for you to work in languages that aren’t your first?”

Building from these ideas, we have collected several ‘témoignages’ and data which helped us design the upcoming day of workshops and discussion. We’ll be discussing our histories, cultural identities, power structures, as well as the legislation that shape our groups’ guiding principles and values. Using these elements as a point of departure, we’ll be attempting to develop a common language for our work together.

We’ll also be sharing priorities and strategies used by various types of groups with respect to membership promotion, hiring equity and building and maintaining safe work spaces across multiple languages. Aboriginal Language Revitalization: A critical part of our context

Language revitalization projects are underway in Aboriginal communities across Canada. One of these is the Yawenda project, a federally funded, million-dollar effort that aims to revive the use of the Huron-Wendat language on the Wendake reserve. It includes weekly courses, teacher training and the creation of instruction materials to help teach Huron-Wendat to preschoolers and elementary school students.

2. COCO: Quebec’s English-Speaking Immigrants and Poverty: Sharing our analysis and building a research agenda.

On Monday Feb 13th there will be a meeting to share knowledge about English-speaking immigrants and poverty and to identify needs for community-based action research on this issue. If you are active in a community organization that works in this area and if you would like more information or to participate, please contact Frances Ravensbergen.

The event is organized by COCo, QUESCREN (Quebec English-Speaking Communities Research Network) and Concordia School of Extended Learning.

4. COCO: COCO Legal Information Session: BOARD 101

Come join us on February 20, 2012, from 1-4pm, at 3680 Jeanne Mance to discuss board basics such as board members’ roles and responsibilities, board composition, board liability and conflicts of interest.This legal information session is for community organizations’ staff, board members and volunteers who want to learn more about board basics, or want to develop tools to train future board members.

This workshop will be delivered in English, by a bilingual facilitator. Participants will be encouraged to speak the language of their choice in discussions. If you are interested in attending this free event, please register by emailing taras@coco-net.org with your name, role, and organization as well as any special needs we might be able to accommodate, by February 17, 2012.

7. COCO: COCo Evaluation Project

Are you a Centraide-funded community organization based out of Montreal who is interested in critically evaluating its work? Are you interested in reflecting on notions of change in your that would potentially allow you to expand on service-provision and move towards a deeper level of social impact and mobilizing? Do you want to think about the qualitative nature of your work? If so, get in touch! COCo is collaborating on a long-term pilot evaluation project in partnership with the Centre de Formation Populaire and we’re looking for participating groups for 2012-2013. Evaluation occurs during monthly sessions spread over the course of six months to a year and is grounded in principles of critical reflection and analysis. Agente de développement secteur créatif à la CDEC Centre-Sud / Plateau Mont-Royal, Marie-Anne Marchand a reçu le mandat, depuis 2007, de faire de la culture un des principaux axes de développement économique et social de ces quartiers montréalais.

Artiste en arts visuels, elle a occupé, pendant six ans, un atelier dans une ancienne usine textile avant de prendre part activement à la lutte contre sa conversion en complexe résidentiel. Marie-Anne accompagne désormais, au sein de la CDEC (Corporation de développement économique communautaire), des projets de consolidation des ateliers d’artistes, de mutualisation des ressources en soutien à la création et de regroupement d’intérêt. Elle nous présentera quelques-unes de ces initiatives qui encouragent les créateurs à participer activement au développement de leur environnement. Son mot d’ordre : offrir une parole citoyenne aux artistes et une conscience culturelle aux citoyens.

9. EVENT (Social Action): Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women

Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women invites you and yours to attend, spread the word about, and participate in this year’s Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women

Tuesday February 14th, 5:30pm at Cabot Square (St.Catherine and Atwater).

The first women’s memorial march was held in 1991 in response to the murder of a Coast Salish woman on Powell Street in Vancouver. Her name is not spoken today out of respect for the wishes of her family. Out of this sense of hopelessness and anger came an annual march on Valentine’s Day to express compassion, community, and caring for all women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Unceded Coast Salish Territories.

Twenty one years later, the women’s memorial march continues to honour the lives of missing and murdered women.

This year, Montreal holds it’s 3rd Annual Memorial March.

10. EVENT (Other): The Week to End Poverty and Stop Conference

March 12 – 17, 2012

Giving students the opportunity to connect and contribute to alleviating poverty locally and globally. Through informative seminars, dynamic workshops and a motivational conference, students are called to action to show the world how to make a difference! Les conférenciers-ières:

Marie-Eve Baron siège au conseil d’administration de Fierté Montréal depuis maintenant un an. Elle croit particulièrement en la participation des femmes et des personnes trans-identifiées aux activités de Fierté Montréal mais aussi aux activités de toute la communauté LGBT. Elle a siégé pendant plus de 2 ans au conseil d’administration de l’ATQ (l’association des transsexuels du Québec). Elle est non seulement impliquée dans son milieu, mais elle occupe également un poste d’ingénieure au sein de Vidéotron et poursuit ses études de maîtrise à l’université de Sherbrooke. Marie-Ève s’investie non-seulement pour la communauté mais aussi pour ses deux filles de 5 et 6 ans, sans oublier Claire, l’amour de sa vie, avec laquelle elle désir agrandir la famille de nouveau.

J Wallace is an educator, activist, and writer based in Ontario. His work focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual,2-spirited, intersexed, queer and questioning (LGBTT2IQQ) individuals, their communities and related issues – with a particular focus on children and youth. j developed and facilitated the Trans-Masculine People Considering Pregnancy course at the LGBTQ Parenting Network in Toronto and co-developed and facilitates their Queer and Trans Family Plannings Course. Currenly j works full-time for the Halton District School Board addressing equity issues around sexual orientation and gender identity. j’s family includes a 16 year old who refers to him as her other parent”, an almost two year old who calls him Abba, and his partner. j will speak about parenting options for trans people.

Tynan Jarret is McGill’s LGBTTQ Advisor and a transgender dad. At McGill, he is responsible for providing training and information to different units and departments that want to ensure they are acting in a non-discriminatory manner. At home, he has half-time custody of his wonderful eight year old daughter. He will speak about his personal experiences trying to raise a safe, proud and liberated child, a child who is grounded in a queer and trans community but who lives day-to-day in the straight, cis world.

Françoise Susset est une psychologue clinicienne qui travaille à Montréal. Elle termine présentement son doctorat en psychologie à l’Université de Sherbrooke. Françoise est une figure connue des communautés trans au Québec. Elle préside actuellement le comité d’administration du Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health. Elle discutera des recherches abordant le bien-être des enfants issus de familles qui incluent au moins un parent trans.

12. EVENT (Other): Gender Training, Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation

Held at: University of Ottawa , Ottawa , Canada
July 16-20, 2012
The new Gender Training Workshop seeks to provide workshop participants with a solid understanding & skills in core concepts, gender analysis frameworks and gender strategies that can improve the effectiveness of your organization’s programmes and projects in working with women and men, boys and girls. The workshop will move you beyond the theory to apply in practical and useful ways gender analysis and gender sensitive strategies to your organization and its programmes to achieve greater social justice. You will learn how to develop interventions based on a differential needs, priorities and issues so that your intervention reinforces positive change for both women and men, boys and girls rather than reinforce inequalities. This workshop also involves field work in the Ottawa area.

***Special Guest Facilitator, Michael Kaufman will lead a one day workshop on Engaging Men to Promote Gender Equality, Transform Gender Relations, and Rethink What it Means to be a Man in the Context of Equality. Choice of the 5 day workshop or special one day workshop with Michael Kaufman. This workshop is a joint collaboration between Gender Equality Inc. and Mosaic.

Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation with 2 day Community Practicum
Held at: University of Ottawa , Ottawa , Canada
July 23-28, 2012
There is increasing evidence showing that evaluation practices that are participatory and inclusive as possible lead to recommendations that have a better probability of being implemented and adopted. Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PM&E) involves a different approach to project monitoring and evaluation by involving local people, project stakeholders, and development agencies deciding together about how to measure results and what actions should follow once this information has been collected and analyzed. This popular and intensive six-day experiential workshop is practically focused with daily excursions into the community and a three-day community assignment with a community based organization. Topics covered at the workshop include Origins of PM&E, Skills and Attributes of a PM&E facilitator, Learning PM&E tools, Designing a monitoring and evaluation framework, Quantitative and Qualitative Indicators, Using Mixed-methods, How to triangulate your findings, Building Action Plans and much more. A three day community practicum with an Ottawa non-profit organization will enable you to actually practice the tools learned in the workshop in a real life setting.

L’Abri en Ville is a non-profit organization that provides housing and community to people with mental illness. Each of its ten apartments has three residents who are supported by a team of volunteers as well as a professional (coordinator) employed by L’Abri . This full-time position involves providing leadership and support to two other coordinators, working with residents and volunteers, with partners in the psychiatric network, as well as managing the office. Experience in fundraising is key.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support and supervision of staff
Ensuring the smooth functioning of the office; Preparation of budget and financial reports in collaboration with the treasurer; Coordinating fundraising efforts and grant applications; Coordination of special projects, e.g. camp and volunteer training; Ensuring a good working relationship with the mental health network; Ensuring the support of residents and volunteers; Performing a coordinator’s function for designated apartments.

Want to involve yourself in an amazing, thriving LGBTQ community? Do you believe in empowerment and non-judgement as fundamentals of supporting youth and young adults? Then join P10 volunteer crew!

Two positions open : drop-in volunteer and board member! We encourage all applications, and in particular, we welcome youth (18-25) and people from marginalized communities. All candidates who meet our requirements will have an opportunity to meet with our drop-in coordinator, but we will prioritize gender non-conforming/trans people, people of color, people identifying as women, those who identify as working class, people with disabilities, and those without an academic background.

Drop-in volunteers: French/English bilingualism; anti-racist and gender sensitive approach; interest in learning about and applying a harm reduction, non-judgmental approach to volunteering; interest in facilitating workshops and activities; people who think queer/ trans youth and their allies are awesome!

Drop-in volunteers MUST be available to attend trainings on Thursday afternoons in February and March (5 weeks). Volunteers are asked to be available to staff at least one drop-in a month (on Thursday night, 5:45 pm to 10pm)

En effet, le recours accru à la taxation, à la privatisation et à la tarification des services publics a pour effet de diminuer l’accessibilité à ces services pourtant essentiels, tout en appauvrissant la classe moyenne et les personnes déjà en situation de pauvreté. Au même moment, les scandales de corruption et de collusion font les manchettes et les banques, les PDG et les grandes entreprises, principaux responsables de la crise économique, font des profits faramineux.

26. SOCIAL ACTION: Focusing in on the Priorities for Quebec’s English-Speaking Community: Be Part of the Conversation!

The Quebec Community Groups Network has undertaken a priority-setting process for the English-speaking community of Quebec. Nineteen community consultations took place this past fall to hear the community’s needs and priorities for the future.

We have reached the second phase of this process where a series of focus groups will be asked to validate the data collected during the consultations. Participants in focus groups will play a critical role in helping establish the English-speaking community’s top priorities for the next five to 15 years.
