Are you always being “volunteered” by your colleagues to handle the markers and flipchart paper because you have good handwriting and your lines are straight(ish)? Are the columns of your notebooks filled with doodles? Do you regularly use the back of a napkin to draw out a concept you are trying to explain? If you have answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, perhaps you are a graphic facilitator in the making. Graphic facilitation is a fun and light way of communicating concepts and ideas that foster shared understanding wherever people are gathered to discuss issues and ideas. Everyday meetings, teaching, and facilitation can greatly benefit from a graphic record of what has been said, as a simple visual representation can sometimes be the most effective way of grasping complex questions. In this one-day workshop, participants will be taken behind-the-scenes to learn all about the art and science of developing graphic facilitation projects and harvesting concepts for others. Participants will be shown examples of successful graphic facilitation and hear about the process that went into creating them. In addition to learning advanced techniques, participants will be led through a series of exercises to explore in-depth listening and how to capture the pulse of a project. Ample time will also be given to practice and learn from each other.

Facilitator: With a background in the visual arts, industrial design, and web development, Paul Messer applies design thinking to everyday life : taking complex and complicated concepts and rendering them in a simple and understandable visual format through his graphic facilitation techniques and simple mockups. At percolab, Paul supports the development of fun and creative was of approaching organizational innovation and collaboration through web and graphic design, graphic facilitation, documenting, and prototyping.
