1. COCO: COCO Legal Information Session: BOARD 101

Come join us on February 20, 2012, from 1-4pm, at 3680 Jeanne Mance to discuss board basics such as board members’ roles and responsibilities, board composition, board liability and conflicts of interest.This legal information session is for community organizations’ staff, board members and volunteers who want to learn more about board basics, or want to develop tools to train future board members.

This workshop will be delivered in English, by a bilingual facilitator. Participants will be encouraged to speak the language of their choice in discussions. If you are interested in attending this free event, please register by emailing taras@coco-net.org with your name, role, and organization as well as any special needs we might be able to accommodate, by February 17, 2012.


2. COCO: FORUM : C’est en franglais! Bridging the Linguistic Divide – Au-delà des écarts linguistiques

March 9th, from 10am-4pm, COCo is hosting a one-day forum for community groups aware of, and impacted by, linguistic divides in their work and/or community engagements. We will be presenting our C’est en Franglais info-sheets and hope you can join us! Please rsvp taras@coco-net.org if you would like to attend. 3. EVENT (Fundraiser): Gala Symphonique, Santropol Roulant

Santropol Roulant is teaming up with four musicians from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and two friends to offer a unique cultural experience filled with music, laughter and friends. Join us on Friday, January 20th 2012 at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. 4. EVENT (Other): The Week to End Poverty and Stop Conference

March 12 – 17, 2012

Giving students the opportunity to connect and contribute to alleviating poverty locally and globally. Through informative seminars, dynamic workshops and a motivational conference, students are called to action to show the world how to make a difference! The winning My Poverty Plan will be implemented as a cooperative movement by endpovertynow and the Week to End Poverty / Stop Conference participants. 6. WORKSHOP: Disaster Recover and New Opportunity for Change: Engaging Youth

During this workshop (next Saturday the 14th from 1:00 – 4:00 at the CHRCS) by Chris Henderson, you’ll be able to ask hard questions about the role of youth in rebuilding cities sustainably, both physically and socially. Case studies will be discussed, particularly those following a natural disaster such as the earthquakes that devastated Christchurch, New Zealand. Montreal might not be earthquake prone but we have our own set of special challenges! This will be interesting for anyone involved in community and international development, youth engagement, or urban planning.

Chris Henderson is currently UNESCO’s lead facilitator at their forum Looking Beyond Disaster and is doing lots of other cool stuff.

7. WORKSHOP: Transforming Workplace Relationships with Appreciative Inquiry

On January 27th at the Concordia University Centre for Human Relations and Community Studies, we’ll discuss how Appreciative Inquiry (or ‘AI’ – an exciting strengths-based methodology) can be applied to improve workplace relationships. In particular, we will share how to implement AI performance reviews, which can help change this experience into one that is more motivating and effective for both parties, while building the relationship between employer and employee. We will also touch upon dealing with conflict and building successful teams through an AI lens.

8. WORKSHOP: Éducaloi – Free Webinars for Registered Charities

Éducaloi is offering free training sessions on the responsibilities of directors of registered charities. The sessions are in the form of webinars (online seminars). Take part from the comfort of your office or home!

9. WORKSHOP: Introduction to managing your organization’s contacts with CiviCRM

A CRM is a tool used by an organization to keep track of all sorts of information about its contacts and to manage its communications with them. This includes relations with donors, members, clients, people subscribed to email lists, etc., all through one system. Koumbit is organizing a training over three evenings in order that organizations that cannot otherwise afford to adopt a CRM will be able to do so for a relatively modest price. 10. CONFERENCE: Conference on school readiness and family literacy

25% of children enter the school system without an adequate foundation for learning. Within the framework of Family Literacy Day and given the growing concern with the issue of school readiness, the conference aims to create a space of dialogue and knowledge sharing between actors in the government and community sectors on the question of school readiness, with an emphasis on family-centered prevention and intervention

11. NEW RESOURCE: Community catering or cooking classes from the Afghan Women’s Centre

The Afghan Women’s Center of Montreal has created a diverse catering collective which emphasizes personal growth and financial stability for immigrant women. This catering group helps women to learn from each other and has created jobs for women who were unemployed. It has also built their self–esteem and given them the chance to make their own money using their talents in cooking. This collective has also given women the opportunity to introduce their traditional food to the people of Montreal.

With more than 100 traditional Afghani culinary delights to offer, such as Kabuli Palow, Mantou and Ashak, which reflect what we believe is typical, nutritious and exotic foods for Montrealers to experience. Each woman brings a particular style of cooking based on the area within Afghanistan that she comes from or from the tradition of cooking passed down within her family.

The women’s catering collective can provide consultation and menu suggestions to people who want to offer an Afghani culinary experience for small or large parties. Please place your orders one week in advance. Cooking classes are also available for small groups (cooking classes). 12. NEW RESOURCE: Website Memberships

The Montreal Healing Arts Community / Réseau des arts de la santé Website (www.mtlhealingarts.org) offers free Premium Memberships to Non-Profit and Charitable Organizations. A member can create a directory profile for their organization, post public event listings for events, workshops and trainings and publish informative blog articles, all of which are visible to the public. Our vision is to encourage health, provide networking opportunities and do community outreach in the healing community of Montreal. For more information:design@mtlhealingarts.org.

14. JOB OFFER: Volunteer and kitchen coordinator, NDG Food Depot

The successful candidate will have a holistic approach to food security as well as a desire to support the development of a vibrant and inclusive community food centre.

15. JOB OFFER: The Media Co-op is hiring!

We’re looking for a local editor to co-ordinate coverage and work with contributors and Media Co-op members in Montreal. This Montreal-based editor will bottom-line development of content from Montreal and will contribute to developing national content along with the other members of the Media Co-op editorial collective. The editor will also work to develop strong links with various communities across Quebec, but especially in Montreal, including members of the Montreal Media Co-op. The Editor will also be responsible for fundraising tasks, including soliciting advertisers, obtaining grants, and broadening the co-op’s membership base.

17. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: 2110 Centre call for directors

Are you passionate about working for gender equality and justice? Do you have skills in policy development, financial management or human resources? Are you familiar with Concordia University? The 2110 Centre for Gender Advocacy is looking for people like you to join its Board of Directors until its Annual General Meeting at the end of April (at which point, Directors may resubmit their candidacy to be considered for re-election). Directors must commit to 1 Board meeting and 1-2 committee meetings per month. Committees include Finance, Labour, Policy, Fundraising and Promotions. Decisions made at these meetings may also generate tasks to be completed outside of meeting times. Board members carry out strategic planning, and ensure that the organisation’s vision, mission and values are up-to-date and reflected in the Centre’s programming and campaigns. Directors are also responsible for developing the annual budget, evaluating staff, and ensuring that the organisation is fulfilling all of its legal obligations. As a Director, you will gain management and communication skills through Board trainings and practice. You will be a valuable and appreciated support to the Centre’s staff, and an important contributor in sharing the Centre’s anti-oppression mandate with the broader community.
