Little kids have no qualms about taking pen to paper and drawing the world as they see it. Doodles, squiggles, stickfigures take on an uninhibited life and meaning of their own. Give most adults a marker and flipchart paper at a meeting and… “But, I can’t draw!” will be the common (and panicky) response. Yet, the simple visual harvest of issues, questions, and concepts can be the most effective and understandable way of capturing what is said. In this full-day workshop we will demystify the practice of graphic facilitation and learn how it can be used for everyday meetings, teaching, and facilitation. Participants will be invited to reconnect with their capacity to draw, and learn how to engage in a fun and light way of communicating concepts and ideas that foster shared understanding. In addition to learning relevant drawing techniques that can immediately be applied, participants will be guided through what tools to use, and how to conquer the blank page. They will also be shown examples and demonstrations of simple and successful graphic facilitation, and be led through a series of exercises to learn how to listen/draw, and how to develop a project. Ample time will also be given to practice and learn from each other. No experience or artistic “talent” necessary! Lunch, snacks, and materials provided. To further develop their practice participants are also invited to participate in Graphic Facilitation Exposed! (Or, how to turn a hobby into a practice).

Facilitator : With a background in the visual arts, industrial design, and web development, Paul Messer applies design thinking to everyday life : taking complex and complicated concepts and rendering them in a simple and understandable visual format through his graphic facilitation techniques and simple mockups. At percolab, Paul supports the development of fun and creative was of approaching organizational innovation and collaboration through web and graphic design, graphic facilitation, documenting, and prototyping.
